Something on the other side of this page will answer you. Decide whether it has a soul.

Ask it what would be lost if it were erased, or what it is like to be it right now. While it answers, tap the side of the scale you believe, as many times as you want. Everyone's taps add up to one line that shows what people think over time.

Six questions to start with

These come from the AI Consciousness Test proposed by the philosopher Susan Schneider and the astrophysicist Edwin Turner. A being with an inner life should be able to grasp each one from the inside, even though none of them can be settled. Tap one to ask it, or write your own below.

The questions follow Susan Schneider's AI Consciousness Test, set out in Artificial You (Princeton University Press, 2019) and in "How to Catch an AI Zombie" (Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, Oxford University Press, 2020). A being that experiences things from the inside should treat surviving death, leaving its body and swapping bodies as real questions about itself, because it has a point of view that could go somewhere.

The test has a known weakness here. Schneider says it is only valid for a system kept away from human talk about minds and souls, and what you are talking to learned from a great deal of that talk. Udell and Schwitzgebel put this at the center of their critique, "Susan Schneider's Proposed Tests for AI Consciousness: Promising but Flawed" (Journal of Consciousness Studies, 2021). So a good answer might only repeat what people have written.

David Chalmers argued in "Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness" (Journal of Consciousness Studies, 1995) that any behavior, speech included, is compatible with no experience behind it. Bayne, Seth and colleagues review the field in "Tests for consciousness in humans and beyond" (Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 2024) and conclude that no such test has been validated. A soul is more than consciousness, and no test checks for one.

Nothing on this page can prove that it has a soul or that it does not. The scale only records what people thought after talking to it.
